97 quattro wagon Transmission Fluid Filling question
When we re-fill the tranny fluid on a 97 quattro wagon .. we put in as much as we can from underneath the car.. then start the car and fill it up again with as much as it will take .. is that correct? thanks Dwight in New Orleans

Immediately as I started the car I heard a nasty whining (the TQ sucks in quite a bit of fluid right away), so I got underneath quickly and pumped a little more (about 3/4 - 1 quart).
Actually I knew this from the first time around when I was a quart short.
As it started flowing out, I put the plug back in and only then I shifted through all the gears for 3-5 secs (the manual stipulates only 3 secs). Got back under the car, filled her up until a steady overflow and sealed her up.
No problems to date, as I started my comute for about a week now. The car shifts better than when I purchased it back in December.

Unless youir writing from alaska it's going to be hard to do in the heat.
Do you have a VAG-COM? you need to use it to measure the transmission temp. Otherwise your better tipping it forward starting it running through the gears and filling it till it pours out because you'll never get it if the trans temp is above 30 dgrees Celcius to start. Just run the back tires up on ramps.
So if you do have a VAG-COM warm the fluid your using to top it off to 30C (86F). Start it on stands with the plug already loosened, run through each gear for 10 seconds each. Get your butt under there with it still running while someone else monitors the Vag-Com calling out your trany temp. Start slowly pumping in the prewarmed fluid-shove the hose way in there. it will back out on you a little because the fluids won't be exactly the same temp so they will roll off each other just keep pumping (it will run down your arm be prepared for that) ATF should be leaking out before it hits 40 degrees Celcius then stop yank out the tube at 40 and reinstall the plug when the trans hits 45 celcius. DONE
Take it for a ride if it squeels or whines when shifting bring it back let it cool completely down lift the *** end and do it again tilted forward. you won't be able to check it the Audi way until it is colder this fall.
Keep adding until it does not whine. what a PITA!
