Default 98 A6 Cluster

I have a 98 2.8 30V and would like to change out the instrument cluster because of the usual problems with the center display. My question is about the odometer within the cluster. Is the vehicle mileage stored in the cluster or in the ECU/someplace else? If it is stored in the cluster then I'm sort of screwed as I've read the odometer cannot be changed[:@]. Thanks!

There is a write up on how to do this in Stoney's links. Search Audi World to find it.

I checked out the links, but did the only references I saw referred to setting remanufactured clusters. I still do not know whether a used cluster can be set to correct mileage. I know in some vehicles the info is stored elsewhere and cluster changes are easy, but I'm not sure about my A6.[sm=dontgetit.gif]
