Default A6 Alternator DIY

Hello- I have searched the archive and couldn't find a DIY to change my Alternator in 99 A6 2.8. I have read it can be done in the service mode (how do you get the car in this position?) and removed under the car. Others are saying the entire front end needs to come off. Also I have been quoted by Audi shops (not dealers) that the job will take 3 hrs. I can either bring my own alternator replacement or have them do it all for $600. I would like to avoid using a shop and do it myself so any tips with pic's are greatly appreciated.

Note: I had the sytem tested and it points to altnerator (battery light stays on (w/ an occasional surge to jump the volts from 12 to 14). Battery was replaced in Sept '07

Thanks for your help in advance,

Can't say there is a writeup on any of these websites, but they are great resources.

To be honest your best bet is to get one off of Ebay, I did a while back and it works perfectly. The alternator is one of the parts that you don't need to go above and beyond out of pocket for, if you can find one used you are set. This one will fit your car:

and you can call them to verify.

Hope this helps.

I am also looking for documentation now for the alternator removal and installation. I'll let you know what I find.

I usually get my Audi stuff from Chris at Force five in Concord NH 603-223-6700. Since I'm cheep, I usually get used stuff when it makes sense, but he also does new stuff.

The used stuffsaves a bunch of money over the long run and his new prices are hard to beat. He has top German quality - not local knock offs.

Thanks to all that replied- I decided to have a local Audi shop complete this repair since I needed my car right away and didn't have the time to DIY. They charged me 2.5 hrs @ $70/hr or $185.5 w/ tax. I purchased the part sperately for $220 (120 volt Valeo) w/ new pully. So $405 out the door- The tech said he put the car in "Service Position" to remove the bolts and the alternator from underneath. Not a bad deal considering most shops quoted 3-4 hrs @ $85-$105/hr and most were not familar with this repair, plus I got to buy my own alternator.
