Default A6 Engine low Oil pressure warning

I need some advice and asistance from the smart Audi folks who may have seen this problem before or at least point me in the right direction.

My 1998 A6 2.8 Quattro experience a major oil leak and the engine was blown. The low oil pressure and beep warning came on and the engine quit. My machanic found a replacement engine and replaced it. The car runs great and has no oil leaks or performance problems. The problem is after about 30 minuets of driving the low oil pressure warning comes on accompanied by the three beeps. After the engine cools down the light goes out and no more beeps. It's hard to see the warning due to the LCD being unreadable. I took the car back to the machanic three times and he has changed the sensor, oil pump, oil and filter. Still after approx 30-40 minuets of driving the beeps return. I love the car and it's smooth should I just take it to the Audi dealer? I am thinking the onboard computer had a major issue with the blown engine and has never recovered. Not sure if the machanic knows or has the equipment to reset the codes. He said he plugged in and there was no codes. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Your replacement engine has bad bearings and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Your mechanic doesn't want to go through that trouble, but he will have to.

Good luck,

Bob

Agreed.. its the engine, not the ECU. You have could have bad bearings, or a bad cooler, or a bad oil pump. What type/weight of oil are you using? What are your oil temps when the alarm goes off? If the oil heats up to the point of getting too thin, the pump will not be able to hold the pressure.. if your bearings are bad, the pump will not be able to hold pressure... Again, bearings, pump, cooler are what I would look at.

And, your tech should be able to figure this out fairly easily.. oil pressure gauge is cheap but very useful.

This is not good news. This has happened to me, and I thought it was related to the aux cooling fan. . . as my temps would get hotter when idling (higher than they should) then I'd get the warning light. I've determined that I'm burning oil, as I have no leaks anywhere I park, and my level was low enough when this happened that I needed to add a quart. The best I could find at the time was 5W full syn. No more warning light, but I don't want to keep topping this off all the time. Correct the cause, not treat the symptoms, eh?

You may be surprised in a good way..I hope so anyway.
Take it to a shop that has a Snap-on or comparable computer module for that audi which will most likely will be an Audi shop and it will show the trouble codes..before you do anything get this diagnostic read out. I'm surprised by some of the posters here..they may be right but how would they know without this critical info especially considering the problem.
