A6 Front End Rattle
if it stops when you touch the brakes your pads are ratling .. usually the inner pad is not seating in the cailiper piston properly or the outer pad is not sticking, you can bend the metal clips for the inboard ones.. sometimes the ridge inside caliper piston gets rusted up and the pad doesnt sit properly , clean all this up and put your pads back with some of that antisqueel blue crap itl be fine.
Thanks for all the good advice. I checked the dust covers and they were not the source. A mechanic friend suggested hitting suspect parts with a rubber mallet.
Theiceman was right! My outer left rear pad was rattling. I thought the noise was up front (esp. since I was told it was the rack). Had my teenager stick his head out the rear window and he said it was definitely the rear wheel. The mallet found the exact spot. I used some CRC disc brake goop, and problem solved for under $10.

Sorry for the slow response --haven't been online. The product is called "Disc Brake Quiet" made by CRC. I got it at Autozone, but lots of places carry CRC products. It's a pale red liquid in a squeeze bottle similar to what they sell wood glue in --not surprising since the stuff is about the same consistency. It's not greasy like some of the other stop-squeak products.
You only apply it to the back of the pad and points where the pad touches the pad carrier (i.e. you don't want it to get on the braking surfaces). The instructions say not to use it on pads with shims.
I put on an even coat, let it dry about 15 minutes and re-coated. After another 15 minutes the second coat was still very tacky (and I was working in 80 degree F weather). I went ahead and installed the pads. I was a little concerned the stuff was too tacky, but it didn't run or make a mess.
I still can't believe it was such a simple problem causing that darn rattle!

I got the same problem, but mine is soo bad now that the whole front end shakes like crazy. Its when I'm about to stop at a red light or stop sign and there is a bump or pot hole and its like abs kicks in and goes nuts, the car will barely slow down while it shakes like crazy (it slowly got worse and worse over a year) and I have to let go of the brakes and then slam them to stop in time. Not safe at all, I still didn't figure out what it is, but I know my FCP lower control arms are half dead already. Ohh and then retarded mechanic that installed them didn't load the suspension, so... I know both inner boots for my rack are also blown, but I doubt a rack can do that, it has something to do with abs and bad control arms or struts, and everytime it happens, i know its destroying my control arms and struts even more. Gotta figure this one out soon... I may try to disable the abs by disconnecting the speed sensor that goes into the cv joint and see what happens with abs off. Even if you turn esp off abs is still on, weird... Or maybe there is a fuse for abs, i'll check later, still have my engine/tranny out, gonna reinstall this weekend, weather permitting...
Oops, I only read page 1, didn't notice that there was a page 2 with a solution, gonna finish reading now...
