Default A6 rear rotor carrier binding

I replaced the rotors and pads on an 2001 quattro and when I replaced the carrier on the rear rotors, I noticed that it is rubbing the rotor on both rear wheels. This is on both rear wheels! Could the hubs have moved out? It looks to be about 1/8" gap. I'm stuck at this point and I'm not to keen to take the hub off just to see if that is the problem with both wheels. Any thoughts/suggestions? The fronts were no problem. HELP

The hubs are pressed in, so they bind pretty good against the spindle (knuckle). I highly doubt they moved out. Moreover the hubs have a "keyed" lip to prevent them from going all the way in, so they wouldn't rub against the spindle. That gap looks normal to me.

Definitely Jim's got the scoop: those new rotors may be the wrong size.

You can actually see the "lip" in the pic:

The first lip on the "shaft" is the stopper for the bearing.

I agree - if the rotors are seated and they rub the caliper housing you have the wrong ones. Also make sure the calipers are floating --

Default correct rotors

Thanks, but they are the correct rotors (255x38mm). I put the old rotors back on just to see if they rubbed too, they did. This is really getting to me, I can not see any adjustment to this. The gap between the knuckle and hub is about 1/8, I don't know what has changed. I'm thinking about putting a lock washer between the carrier and the knuckle as a spacer. I appreciate the replies but the rotor is definitely the correct one.

I would assume you have the 2.7 engine. Your front ones suppose to be: 321 x 30mm,
while the rear ones should be: 245 x 10 mm (15" wheels) , or 255 x 10mm (16", 17", and 18" wheels).
You may want to take a look h e r e.

Good luck to ya.

Your first picture shows that the rotor is not seated onto the hub enough as evidenced by the lack of protrusion of the hub center from the rotor. Check the inside of the rotor hat for any witness marks to see if it is hanging up on the hub. Since your old rotors also rub, something is not allowing the rotors to seat properly.

Having said all that, I hope you have discovered the root cause of the problem and have it fixed by now. BTW, you don't have to remove the carrier, you can get the rotor off with it in place.
