Default Advice on a couple of A6 issues

Hello everyone, I decided to post a question since there seem to be alot of well informed users.

I have a 2000 A6 2.7T with 130k+ miles. Car is in great shape, couple of problems which I am seking advice on:

I have replaced the rotors on the car once at 105k because they shimmied at higher speeds (50+ mph) but now the problem is back again. New rotors were bought from Audi dealer, changed pads also, worked great for 15k miles. A friend told me that the problem is not warping, but buildup on the rotor surface, is this true? So, since the problem is back again and disappeared for a long time, what are my options to fix this permanently?

Next, my rear view mirror has a big bubble in it and no longer works. Its an expensive part. Is this something I could try to replace myself? Any tips on how to do it?

With gas prices, I have started using regular gas... any problem doing this?

Now, lastly, when I turn the car off, I hear the turbos wind down. Its not loud or squeaky, but I hear them. Is this a sign of wear?

Thanks for the help!!

Default RE: Advice on a couple of A6 issues

I can answer a couple of your questions for you (I also have a 2000 A6 2.7T).

I was having a shimmy problem and after doing rotors and pads it turned out that one of my wheels was out of balance. Regular balancing didn't work, though, so they had to do something else. I think it might have been called counterbalancing or something. You can do a search on the forum and find some info about it.

Regarding the rear view mirror, yes you can definitely do it yourself. I did and it took me about 10 minutes. The part was expensive, but at least I didn't have to pay for installation. Here'sthe description I followed on how to replace the mirror from someone who was installing an upgraded mirror: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int36.shtml.

As far as gasoline, with 130,000 miles I don't think you're going to hurt your performance much by using regular gas. However, I did some math and discovered that with premium gas I get better mileage. In fact the increased mileage just covers the extra cost of the premium gas so it makes it worth it from me.

Can't comment on the turbo noise, but I look forward to seeing someone else's response.

Good luck!
