Default Axle/Strut Noises

Need Advice:

Had my passenger front axle replaced 2 months ago by an independent mechanic. Recently started hearing a rattle/clunk noise when going over bumps at low speeds in the replaced axle location. Sounds kind of strut related, but not sure.

Had my car serviced by Audi a week ago and had them check it out, they said it passed the road test. Not sure if they actually were able to isolate the noise and hear it the same as I the everyday driver of the car can.

I pulled the tire off and checked out the handy work of this independent mechanic and the axle rod diameter differs from the driver side, which is still the original. Appears the replaced axle diameter is approx 3/4" while the original is approx 1" or greater. Could it be that this mechanic swapped it out with a lesser non-factory part? Would this be the cause of all the noises I am hearing?

That said, before I pay this crook of a mechanic to check it out and possibly screw me some more. What can I do as a self check to better prepare myself for this battle? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like he installed a cheap, made in China, replacement axle. Mine lasted 3 days.

Take it back and make him do it over.

The noises that can come from that area are endless. Could be the ball joints, could be a bad control arm wich audi is famous for or it could be improper installation of the new axle. If you are not going to use an audi dealer to do repairs (and I agree they are crazy expensive) you should find a mechanic that specializes is audi or at least German auto repair. the German companies make such a different animal than anyone else. I would be skeptical of bringing it back to who ever butchered it in the first place. Good Luck!!!!!

Thanks for the responses. I know of one Euro Shop in town. I will give them a try.
