I have a 2001 A8L that I need to order a rebuilt steering rack but they need to know if I have a rack with steering strut or without steering strut. I cannot see in there. Do all 2001 A8L have a steering strut? Thanks.

 

They all have the damper...rebuilts/new usually sold without, and you can put old damper on new rack. Same with "servotronic" solenoid...transferable.

I gave you the wrong info...the BENTLEY MANUAL was dead wrong on this one.
Facelift A8/S8 (2000-2003) did NOT have a steering damper attached to the steering rack. I just discovered this while looking at my own car ('01 A8).
Looked it up with a supplier and discovered 97-99 had the damper...2000 on did not. It's easy to see, by looking inside the right front fender well...the type with damper have a 2 part bellows (boot) on the steering rack, with a protruding mount between the 2 boots where the end of the steering damper connects. But all suppliers and qualified mechanics SHOULD know this and supply/install the proper unit.

Hope I didn't mess you up with the incorrect answer...I'm only right 97.3% of the time
