When i start my 96 A6 a rattling noise starts..it gets louder as i accelerate and then stops. But when i come to a stop it gets loud again??? What could it be???

ALSO... when i drive my car for a bit i start to smell a burning smell outside the car and sometimes inside. But its a pretty strong smell. im worried im doing harm to my A6 by driving it with such problems. when i opened my hood once i saw some light smoke coming from an area behind the engine. Not sure if it was coming out of the engine but it was definitely an area behind the engine?????

Sounds like an oil pump going bad. Better get it looked at before you destroy your engine!

yea i saw that everyone asks about a burning smell.
haha. what would you recommend for stopping this smell?
im a new audi owner so i have little knowledge about them. im trying to learn.

The "oil burning " smell is quite common. It's usually the cam tensioner seal, not the easiest DIY job, most have the garage do it. I had it done to my '01 2.8L engine, had no oil smell since.

 

How much did it cost to fix the cam tensioner seal???

The rattling would be the cam chain tensioner not getting enough oil pressure from the bad oil pump or a lifter or two also not getting enough oil. Better have it checked out.

I just got my A6 from the garage and the rattling is actually the catalytic converter is broken. I have to buy two of them. But i think I'm gonna go to a junkyard. But thanks for all your input. Its much appreciated.
