Default cam chain tensioner seals without the tool?

I just got all my timing belt and valve cover gaskets/seals etc. from Blauparts. I got the timing belt tool kit but I messed up and forgot to rent the cam chain tensioner tool. Is there any way to change the chain tensioner gasket without the special tool 3366? I have to send the timing belt tools back before next weekend, so this weekend is my only chance to get this job done - not enough time to order the tool from anywhere. 1998 2.8 30v V6.

This writeup seems to suggest you can do it without the tool. It's for a Passat but I think that's the same engine right?

I read of some using zip ties to tighten tensioner but after having recently done it using the tool I find it hard to believe. Since you bought parts & rented timing belt tools from blauparts , I suggest you call them and explain the mistake & offer to buy the tool from them & ask them to reset the clock for the timing tool returns. Online you can find the part for ~$12 + shipping, but that won't help your time crunch. Hopefully blauparts will feel your pain & accommodate you. If not, beg.

Thanks CRuby. I've spent all day watching videos and reading about this mechanism, and it does look like the tool is unavoidable to do it right. I've been calling audi shops in my area but no one has the tool or is willing to sell it to me. There are still a few more places I can try though.

I think I'll end up doing what you've suggested. I have the Blau tools until next Monday, so if I do the job next weekend the tools will only be a couple of days late. If I can't persuade them to help me out, then I think the late charge is $10/day which I can live with.

I don't suppose any of you guys have this tool and happen to live anywhere near Kansas City or Lawrence?
