You have to pull the two bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the spindle.

I am trying to change the front pads on my 2005 A6 - I've taken out the two bolts but I still am having trouble removing the caliper from the rotor...do I need to loosen or take off 4 star bolts as well? I've tried to loosen but very hard - are these reverse threaded?

Do not remove the star bolts, that will disassemble the caliper. You need to remove the pad retaining spring on the outside of the caliper. Once that spring is out the pads will probably catch on the ridge of rust on the outside rim of the disk. You will need to manually push the caliper piston back into the caliper. I typically do this simply by twisting the caliper back and forth about a vertical axis. Once the pads are a little loose on the rotor it should slide off.
