Maybe a bad coolant level sensor. Why the fan is not turning on? Bad relay, fuse.

The fuse for the electric fan on my 1998 A6 is located behind a trim panel beneath the steering column (behind the dash). Hope that helps.

There is a TSB at audi for the fan control module having wiring problems, the fix is installing an overlay harness. Take it to the dealer and tell them both of your fans aren't working. Im not sure if it applies to the 4.2L engine but thats what it sounds like.

How did you make out? My temp guage was at 4/5ths today, constant on highway and local stop and go, and no change when i turned on AC (which should activate aux fan, I assume). So I'm thinking sending unit, but...

Your thermostat is like stuck closed. It blocks the coolant flow and the fans don't come on because the heated coolant dosn't reach the fan switch. The over heat light looks very similar to the low coolant light.

does anybody knows what the problem is when overheating temp guage all the way up, coolant full ,big fan (radiator fan )dont come on but the two smaller fans do come on even when i turn off the car.the a/c blows cold with nomal temp thenblows hot when the guage goes up ,the car dont pull as it used to. it is losing power.
