CV axle replacement B5 HELP PLEASE.
You wanna know why it did not go in so well? When I was originally hammering the crap out of it to get it out, the punch I used slipped off and marred the inside of the hole, leaving a nice burr on the inside. The end was of course hanging on the burr. I smoothed this out carefully and then it tapped right in with no problems. I also found that when I turned the wheel a quarter turn to the right that that lined up the hole to the ball joint end. I did not need to stick a chisel in the slot provided, but I did use that technique on the front upper ball joint end.
After that went in it was a cake walk. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. And here is the real kick in the butt. After I had everything together and cleaned everything up I went to start the car for a test drive and the battery was too low to turn her over. I had the key in the ignition too long at some point when I was turning the wheels.
I just did not realize how much force you had to use when driving out the pinch bolt, upper control arm ball joint ends and tie rod ball joint end. Most people in posts used the word tap, I think they should have used the phrase "hammer the crap out of it until it comes out" instead, because that is obviously what it takes sometimes.
