CVT Transmission Binding

CVT Transmission Binding
My A6, FWD, CVT has had a major transmission failure. The car has 56,000 miles and I have never had any transmission problems. My wife was driving the car a few weeks ago and all of a sudden, the engine went dead. The car restarted immediately but would not move. The engine would rev as normal but the car would not move. We were out of town so we had the car towed to an import repair shop and somehow they got the car to move, but the car would only go about 10 mph and you could hear the transmission binding. We had the car towed home (over 300 miles) to another import shop and the mechanic is recommending replacing the CVT with a rebuild from Audi ($6,000). I have no idea what to do. Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Here are my questions:
Should I take the car to a Audi dealership and try to find out exactly what is wrong?
Should I consider replacing the transmission with a certified rebuild or have the original repaired.
Should I just salvage the car (the car is otherwise in great shape, most all scheduled maintenance at dealership, brand new Bilstein shocks)?
Again, thank you very much for your suggestions.
