Exclamation Drive Shaft

Hey guys,

I got my new passenger side drive shaft in just now. I'm looking for that tool which will remove the bolts mounting the transmission end of the shaft. I remember it being some kind of weird special item. Any leads? Is it Torx or Hex, or some variant?

2000 A6 4.2L Quattro.

Thanks!

Double square. 10 mm IIRC but could be 8. I got a set at the local import parts store.

Pretty sure its the 10mm for A6 and 8mm for A4. It's called a triple square bit. They'll have them at napa or other parts stores just ask them

Here are napa part numbers
8mm - SER2304 - $4.99
10mm - SER2305 - $5.49
12mm - SER2306 - $5.99

Thanks guys, you've been very helpful!

I'm hoping this harsh vibration will go away once the CV joint problem has been fixed with the new shaft, and the upper control arms have been replaced.

I've never see a flange mounted shaft before. There's usually an internal or external spline on each end, one for the hub and the other for the tranny. Apparently this one just bolts onto a rotating plate or something on the tranny end, the new shaft doesn't even have a hole, much less a spline. I guess I'll find out when I get the old one off! Wish me luck!

Thanks again!
