Default ECT Sensor Replacement Question

Hi everyone!

I'm attempting to replace the ECT sensor on my 2005 A4 1.8T. I've found the sensor and I am following the DIY article here: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng66.shtml

The problem is that my firewall appears to be much further in towards the engine than the vehicle in the DIY article. I just can't my hands or a screwdriver back there to pull the clip out. I'm beyond frustrated now. The only think I can think to do is to remove the crank case breather hose.

This will be my first time doing something like this.

a) Is this safe?
b) Anything I need to know when returning the breather hose to its original position?
c) Are the clips holding the breather hose in place one-time use only?
