Actually if you use the VAG 5051 ( the Audi/VW Scan tool), you do need the engine code, to pull up proper diagnostic test plans in Guided Fault Finding. If you use the Snap-On Modis or Launch X-431 you also need the engine code to get the proper diagnostic test plans in those scan tools. If you want to pull generic OBD-II codes then you don't need an engine code. But OBD-II codes don't always mean a component is faulty..... And when you go to those stores, they scan your vehicle and then try to sell you that part. There is a reason why the guy at the Auto Parts Store works at the Auto Parts Store and not in a shop.

I hear you there. I'm using a Vag-Com and I haven't needed to enter an engine no. yet, just the model of the car. But then you know as well as I do the number is in your face as soon as you stick your head under the hood. I see AVK stamped on my block clear as day. (wish I was seeing another group of letters- LOL) So if those boys didn't know that, what were they going to do with the info when they retrieved it. I mean a 5 second search on google will tell you where the number is located.

Thank You so much for that info....I met someone who's coming down to meet me and scan the car for free . Hopefully he's not a crazy predator I found off the internet! :P

Good news, I hope they don't come back. Did he write down what the codes were for you?
