maybe the fuel pump had a hickup; or maybe the fuel filter. Probably it got indigestion symptoms from the fresh fuel.

what chefro said is unlikley.....you might get a skip or something from something like that but you engine completely shutting down is very unlikely. its hard to say what caused it without being there or without any codes.....but if its fine now dont worry about it! Sometimes these German cars will fix themselves.

Water in the fuel? Dunno... Most likely you had a vapor lock. Practially unheard of in this day and age, but it still happens, especially if the car was warm at shutdown the restarted quickly.

Cool

i have a 2000 audi a6 4.2. i have had the same problem as you but it happen more frequently as i slow down to make a turn. Its actually very scary car shutting of during a turn, but i put it in neutral and start it back up when the car is still coasting. I took it to audi a few times after a hundreds of dollars of testing the problem was a major vacuum hose leak. i hope this help you man cause no body was able to tell me this.
