Default Extremely Hot Air from Driver's Dash Vent

My 2005 A6 3.2 has started doing something really strange. Regardless of the climate control temperature settings, on occasion (it has happened 3 times) it starts dumping extremely hot air out through the driver's dash vent. Air from the other vents is about would be expected depending on the settings. No change of temperature or mode seems to have any effect, but if I just shut the engine down and restart, it "resets" and behave normally. Has anyone else run into this? Any idea as to cause?

Is the car supposed to give a single beep when I shift to reverse, regardless of whether there's an object in the parking sensors' range? I can't recall, but it seems that maybe it started doing this only recently.

Heater control valve may have got stuck. Clean the valve and see if it helps.

This is a known problem. There is a TSB on this.
