Hi all,

I have a 2001 2.7t manual with about 95k miles. Lately, I've noticed that I'm getting a loud (I thought a semi-truck was passing me the first time) fan noise. It only occurs when the engine is warmed up, and seems to happen more the warmer it is outside. Yesterday, it was 60, and once the car warmed up, it was doing it fairly often.

The noise corresponds to the rpm level - if I give it gas, the noise gets louder. Doesn't matter whether it is in neutral or actually driving. Then sometimes, it just stops and sounds normal.

I've considered the following:

Boost leak: I don't think the boost leak would be intermittent. And the car doesnt feel like it loses any power.

Turbo going bad: If the turbo was this loud, I imagine it would have stopped working by now.

There are no check engine lights going off.

Any thoughts?

I don't think it's the fan. I had a friend push the gas while I listened to where the sound was coming from, and vice versa. It doesn't seem to be coming from the fan. It seems to be coming from around the engine. Maybe behind/under the engine? Maybe there is a boost leak somewhere.

Does it make sense that a boost leak would only come intermittently? Would you be able to hear a boost leak when you are in neutral just revving the engine?
