Don't purchase the Ebay rotor and pads unless you know exactly what your getting. I use Force Five in Concord NH, Blauparts, or Autozone for most of my parts.
You'll need to check the RossTech web site to see if their free-bee software works with a mac.
As for the timing belt -- It's an interference fit motor... The belt dosen't go out slowely it just breaks and bends lots of stuff. You can sometimes get an indication about how old a belt is by looking at the teeth but it is always safer to do the belt if there is a question.
VagCOM stsands for Volkswagen Audi Group communuication. Although some of it is standard OBDII most is proprietary VAG stuff that requires the correct code reader. As said by Midniteoyl having the ability to reprogram things requires the real thing.
