A-6 2.7 Turbuo Quatro Sedan
Today while doing the weekly wheel washing to keep brake dust off the alloys, all 4 wheels had traces of grease that was extremely difficult to remove.
Usually this would mean whell bearing failure to me but 4 wheels simultaneously is a bit confusing.
There are no noises and the car was not just in for a grease job so I don't know what could cause this .
Any ideas ?

Cv boots/joints might be bad/cracked

 

CV boots......or maybe you drove is some freshly paved streets???

 

C/V boots are probably torn. Tires may have been rotated post-c/v tear. Hence the grease on rear wheels???

 

Here is what you need to do.

1) Turn on your car and turn the wheels ALL the way to the right.
2) Get under the car BEHIND the wheel by the dirvers side with a flash light. Shine it into the wheel well and see if your CV boots look like THIS: https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...=109929&page=2 If they do, then you need new cv boots. Cost at a shop of $200-300 per including labor

3) Turn the wheels all the way to the other side and repeat for the passengers side.

 

I don't know, all four CV boots at the same time? Not unless someone was f***in with you! Same for wheel bearings. One at a time, yes. All four at once? No way! I support the "you drove through something" argument. But, check your CV joints to make sure one of them wasn't the culprit (althoug, when cleaning the wheels, you can tell if one went bad!).

Wheel bearings on our cars are closed sealed I think. You shouldn't have an oil leak like that. I would just clean it and see if it comes back. It could just be some residue from the shop.
