It should have a headlight chime. Check to see if your interior light comes on when you open the drivers door. The switch that controls both is part of the door latch mechanism. It is a common part to fail, usually from corrosion. The microswitch itself is not available from Audi. Most dealerships stcok replacement door latches (Part # 4B1 837 015H) in stock (surprise, surprise !) that they will sell you for $200 and change.
If you're a real DIY guy you may want to try to repair it http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec96.shtml.

The car is certified and is under factory warranty... Do you think they will cover this?
