Highway RPM
Hello everyone!
I'm new here and am very excited about my new used Audi. I've always been a do-it-yourselfer, buy my last two cars were a '67 Ford Galaxie and a '71 International Scout II. Needless to say, I'm a little scared to mess with a car with so many electronics, but it'll probably be a piece of cake in a few short months.
The car is a '98 A6 Avant with the 12v 2.8 and a non-tiptronic automatic (I don't know much about the trans. 3 speed? 4 speed? Overdrive?) My first concern after a few highway trips is cruising RPM. Does 3200 seem normal at 70mph? The tires are 205 55 16. Is that stock size or am I running too small? I also talked recently with an Audi owner who said that the transmission is "adaptive" and that it is probably reflecting the driving habits of the previous owner. "Just disconnect the battery and it will re-learn". Seems strange, but again, I'm not used to all the electronics.
Also, I've read that I shouldn't wait to buy a code reader. Are the cheapos on Ebay a safe bet ($30-$50), or should I spring for a more expensive version such as VAG-COM??
Thanks in advance for any and all replies,
Hans

RE: Highway RPM
You should invest in a VAG COM, once you learn how to use the VAG there is endless possibilities to what the scanner can do.
As for the transmission its a 5 speed automatic, and it does learn the driver's behavior when driving but simply driving it harder will make the TCM make adjustments and it will know that its not the same person driving it. It actually has different stored profiles fordifferent drivers, for instance if its a family car,it can tell the differencefrom the momand daddriving the vehicle and will use the memorized shift profile for them.
