How screwed am I?
So, I have this huge clunking noise in my fount right wheel assembly when I turn right.. I have a torn CV boot. I also had my sway bar detached to do my oil pan recently and reattached it while on jacks. I guess I want to know if it is the Joint and it is clunking will repacking it and replacing the boot solve the problem? Or, have I damaged the joint to far? It has only being doing it for a day. And, if I should have put the car back down before torquing the sway bar? And,.... how screwed am I?! :-)
If you already know that your CV boot is torn and releasing grease, then chances are that the actual CV joint inside is bad if its making noise. I wouldn't say that you are screwed...but if you drove the car with the torn boot for so long, then you will have to spend money to replace the axle half shaft. If you can wrench on your own car then you'll be looking at the parts cost only, probably $100 to $150 for a new axle half shaft. If you can't do the work yourself then you should estimate probably about two hours of labor to the parts cost.
As far as reattaching your sway bar, it should be torqued down once the weight of the car is on the suspension.
