Default Issue With ABS & ESP

Hi All -

I have a 2002 2.7T with 94k on it. I have been having an issue for some time now that I'm not sure what to do.

On occasion, w/o any cause I can tell, my ABS and ESP lights come on and my horn will not work. Typically shutting the car off and then restarting it can solve this. Also the area that displays what gear I am in will shift from the letters light up to to everything except the letters. Sometimes the ABS/ESP things and gear lights happen at the same time, sometimes not. When the ABS light is on, from what I can tell, ABS is not working.

I took it in and had my mechanic test drive it. The lights came on while he was driving. He parked (left it running) and hooked it up to the most recent version of the Audi computer and it displayed no error codes or anything.

He suggested that it might just be a cluster problem. But doesn't that imply just a display issue? Why would my horn stop working if the issue was in the cluster?

Any ideas, even wild ones, would be helpful as a starting point.

If it matters I have had the timing belt done and, most recently (and unexpected) the alternator. The issues were before either of those were done.

the ABS module is a common failure item on these cars. Yours may be on its way out. As far as the cluster lighting, its also a common problem area and is probably on its way out.

The horn is strange, probably just a loose wire.

Both can be repaired relatively inexpensively at BBAReman in Mass. I used them to fix a friend's ABS. It cost about $150 and it was back in 4 days. With your car you can drive it while the ABS controller is out for repair, you just wont have ABS.

Default ESP and ABS Lights

I have a 2004 2.7T A6 with 60K miles.

ABS / ESP lights went on, and it ended up being the break light switch.

I replaced the switch, and now the ESP light comes on after 2-10 miles of driving. However, whenever I turn the car off it resets to okay.

Not sure what is wrong, looking for some ideas.
