Labor to Replace Alternator

Alternator Repair
So I'm here reading these posts on how you guys are getting such good prices on costs. From a total of 300 to 1200 by some of you are crazy. I just got slammed with $686 at an alternate Audi repair shop. Then I went to Midas with my own $200 purchased alt. And it'd be $100/hr however long it'd take. Should I keep looking around, is an Audi dealer a better choice, or what shops would you all recommend to take my car to?

I think upwards of 700 - 1200 is a fair price for this job. 700 being with an aftermarket unit, and 1200 being with an OEM unit.
The disparity in pricing is probably stemming from people getting quotes from places that have no idea what's involved in an alternator replacement on an A6 and then they are stuck charging the quoted labor. I can't see a shop doing this for about 200 in labor knowing what's involved in the process.
Funny story, I once talked to a guy who works at a local mom and pop shop and he told me he did an alternator replacement on a 3.0 and said he didn't have to take the front off or put it in the service position. He said, "It was like giving birth... I'm a mechanic, it's what I do." This isn't the correct response. I don't even want to know what he bent/broke/abused to make this even possible without extra room from being in the service position.
Bottom line: Find a good indie shop that knows German cars, or do this job yourself - it's not terribly difficult. $300 all in screams they have no idea what they're doing.
