RE: Need help installing air filter on A6 4.2
There's a cover over the air filter housing. It's on the passenger side of the motor. Remove this and the duct that goes to the front. Underneath the cover, you'll see the filter housing that has the retaining clips that most are used to seeing. Unsnap the clips, remove the fliter, install new and put it all back together. It's kind of tricky to mate the housing surfaces back together but it's not that hard. Hope this helps.

be careful when you unsnap the clips too. they have a tendancy to fall out from the bottom of the airbox and it makes it a little tricky when putting it back together. the duct that goes to the fron that he's referring to is held in by 2 screws that you should be able to see when you open the hood. you might also need to remove part of the intake piping so that you can get the top all the way off.

RE: Need help installing air filter on A6 4.2
I have a 00 4.2 and I have actually just replaced my air filter this past weekend with a K&N. I have found out that if you take the screw out that holds the bottom of the airbox onto the frame you can move the unit around to give you a little more play when trying to access the clip on the lower left corner. This was the toughest part for me. I have some video of it if you need more assistance. Please email me.
