Default New owner with a strange issue

Greetings to everyone from a newbie and a first time Audi owner. I bought a 2000 A6 2.7T 6-speed recently and I'm having a strange issue with it. After driving it for about 15 minutes or so, this strange banging noise starts appearing, most noticeably in the first 3 gears. The more I press the gas, the more noticeable it is and it is obvious that it impaires the smooth running of the engine. As a driver, I feel the shaking in my pedals but the shaking is also felt if I sit in the passenger seat with somebody else driving. Not being much of a car expert, it's hard for me to describe exactly what it feels like but the best I can put it is as if I have a flat tire and I'm pushing the car a lot. Hopefully this will help in understanding what I mean. I took it back to the place I bought it and they haven't been much help so far. They don't think it's the engine (doesn't happen when the car is stopped and I rev it) or tranny. They took it to a mechanic they deal with and what they told me is, and I quote "some shaft in the back needed to be greased up. Now you need to drive the car for about a week or so and it should be good". Needless to say, the car is still behaving exactly the same and I will be bringing it back once again. In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone can have any input for me. Any comment will be greatly appreciated!

does it make the noise when driving slower? are you getting the noise when driving hard? im thinking engine/gearbox mount or C/V joint

Thanks for the quick reply! When driving slower, especially when slowly taking off, it is most noticeable but the slower I drive, the longer the interval between the "bangs". The faster I drive, the frequency of bangs intensifies. When driving on highway (120km/h or so) the banging disappears but some vibration can still be felt from time to time.

check the tyres are ok like no balloons on them which would distort the wheels

Well, I'm hoping the mechanic did look into that possiblity but I'll take another look at the tires myself. Thanks for the tip.

make sure the wheels are on tight, people in a hurry sometimes forget to nip them up

Don't I know it! I had a wheel fall off on me a few years back because the guy who worked on it didn't screw them back on properly!
