Default Oil temp readings

Hi guys wondering if I can pic some brains, how long after running does your oil temp gauge come off the 150F mark and where does it stay?

Reason I ask is that I suspect mine may be broken. I have driven for about 5 hours stopping only once at speeds between 65 and 80 with a few seconds over 100. Not once in this drive did the oil temp gauge move above the 150F mark. It does move up to the bottom of the scale when I start the car but I guess that is just how the gauge works.

I am running recently changed (2000 miles ago) Castrol 5W40 and refuse to believe the oil cooler in this car is that good. I have only ever once see the gauge move above the 150 mark after driving to New York from Philadelphia and sitting in the snow on a friends drive on Long Island for 10 minutes or so but not when driving.

Is there a test that can be performed to see if the oil temp (and i think level) censor is working ok?
many thanks
James

A quick question. How is your water temperature gauge reading? Is it normal, as in right dead center on the gauge? Or does it move around?

My water temp gauge gets quickly up to temperature and stays dead center on the gauge. The only time I have noticed exceptions to this is when commuting on a cold (aka snowy and icy morning) morning when I warm the car (for the sake of the turbos) and then I am in slower traffic the gauge will clime and then when I run at 55-60 on the interstate it will drop back down and them climb to normal operating temperature. I guess this is just the affect of very cold aid moving against the radiator.

i would look at the sending unit. i'm not sure if you can check that with VAG-COM or even better, see the values the sending unit is putting out. my oil usually comes up to around 200-220 within 5-10 minutes of the coolant temp coming up to normal.

The sending unit? how is that different from the sensor the monitors the oil temp and level or are they one and the same?

I second the sending unit diagnostic. Only other option is the instrumental cluster, but pretty doubtful.

LOL I pay little attention to my oil temp gage. If I remember correctly it runs at around 200 after the motor is warm, but it is hidden by my GPS. I found that I can wedge my new GPS into the recess in front of the clock and oil temp gage while leaving the fuel and voltmeter readable.
