Transmission Problems
Hey, I have a 2002 A6 3.0 FWD Audi and lately the transmission has been slipping very badly. It'll happen just about any gear especially between 2 to 3 rpm'. I got a quote from the Audi stealership here in Charlotte and they want $9000 for a transmission rebuild. Any ideas?

I dread things like that happening!
I agree this is not something you want to pay the dealer for. No one should pay $9K to fix a $9K car!
Where I work we produce thousands of transmissions a week and I have a pretty healthy understanding of what it takes to make one right. There are several options open to you, risks get lower the more you spend (typically):
1. Get a new transmission from Audi and have them install it (I assume that is $9K because $9K for a rebuilt unit would be criminal).
2. Get a factory rebuilt unit and have someone familiar with the A6 to install it.
3. Get someone familiar with the A6 and transmission repair to rebuild yours.
4. Buy a 'good' used unit and have it installed by someone that knows the A6.
5. Go to a franchise transmission shop and hope for the best. At least they will usually warranty their work, even if they have to rework it a few times.
6. Have someone remove your transmission and rebuild it yourself, then have it re-installed.
The last option is not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced. I would only contemplate rebuilding a transmission made by my company because I would have lots of support.
Food for thought anyway......

Unfortunate thing is that you have a CVT. Not that many people know how to work on that stuff, including the dealers. I am surprised that the dealer is suggesting to rebuilding the transmission, because from what I hear, they tend to replace CVTs not rebuild them. $9000 is really high even for a dealer.
