Default Over heating problem!

I drive a 95 A6 2.8l. I have serious over heating problems. NO CLUE WHAT IT IS! No white smoke from my exhaust. My thermostat is punched out, thought that was the problem so did a redneck repair. didnt help. what do you think?

ok throwing out ideas. I unscrewed the bleeder valve & had coolant flow so i dont think it would be water pump correct? Bad radiator is possible. the fans kick on. im just so confused on it

Coolant flowing via the bleeder screw will not confirm a bad water pump. A bad pump can still circulate coolant, but not enough.

Once the coolant temperature is raised to the operating temperature, turn the car off and run your hand over the radiator. If you the radiator is cold all over, then your system is plugged somewhere. If you feel a huge difference in temperature on the radiator surface, then your radiator is bad.

You mentioned that the over heating is serious. How serious? Did you check to see if your fan clutch is working properly?

ok hopefully its just something simple like that & not a head gasket. I drive a mile to work & my car is pretty warm. I dont think it should get warm that fast but this is also my first audi so maybe its normal im not for sure

If your cooling system is working properly, then the gauge should be pegged in the center without moving once warmed up.
