I had a bad stat that started that way. Just a little past the middle, then it got worse and worse.

There are lots of variables here and not much information. First you need to figure out if the readings to the temp gauge are actually accurate. Does the temp gauge go back down if you crank the heat? Is the heat even hot? Does the coolant temp go up at idle? What does your coolant look like? Have you ever replaced any parts in the cooling system like the t-stat, coolant temp sensor, heater core, etc?

if i turn on the ac the needle drops to the dead middle but i havent tried it with the heater. i think its the extra fan that turns on that cools it. and sometimes it stays in the c so idk what it might cause it to not read the temperature

Correct. When the AC comes on, the auxiliary electric fan comes on with it, which would help pull more air through the radiator, cooling you off.

This makes me think coolant temp sensor. If your t-stat was stuck closed or your water pump was going bad, it would always run hot. If your t-stat was stuck open it would always run cold. If your heat was never hot, your heater core could be the issue. The fact that sometimes it acts one way and sometimes another makes me think your coolant temp sensor is sending crazy signals to the gauge.

yeah i think that might be it the coolant temp sensor cuz the heater works fine. and its a pretty easy fix right?

It's not bad, just a tight sqeeze. Two pointers:

1. Loosen the cap on the coolant so there is no pressure when you pull the old one.
2. Tie a thread around the little plastic clip that holds it in. You'll thank me the first time you drop it, and the next time, and the next.....
