Parents be warned lock out problem !!!
If somebody inside the car could not lock the doors because the key was in the ignition, or the advanced key was within range, how do you propose that we keep the carjackers out?
Very strange, as far as I know no A6 has door locking buttons at the rear seats. And as far as the smart key is concerned, the doors will not lock with the key inside unless manually locked from the drivers side lock switch.
I have an 06 a6 that I bought several months ago, and basically the same thing happened to me (except without the kid) so I am not sure the kid had anything to do with it. I had my smart key in my briefcase and opened up the passenger side door by touching the handle and put my briefcase on the passenger seat. I then closed the door to walk around to the passenger side, and as soon as I did, the car doors locked and I was now lock out. I had to take a cab home to get my spare. Very frustrating.
I now am very diligent about keeping the key in my pocket, but is this the way the system is supposed to work, or do I have some sort of bug in the system. If this is the way it was designed to work, then it seems ridiculous that the design would allow you to so easily lock yourself out of your car.

Like Jack said, these cars are ALIVE... How the heck it locks itself up if you don't touch any locking buttons or mechanisms?
Isn't the "smart" locking button right on the exterior handle, just as the video shows? Maybe you touched it as you closed the door. However, if only the front doors are designed with the locking button on the handle, then you must be having a bug in the system.

Not to be too harsh on a pregnant woman, in many jurisdictions, leaving a child in the car while you "pop in" to a "convenience store" for a pack of smokes can land you or your wife in trouble with the law in your land.
All the fuzz needs to see is an infant in a car without an adult near and you may, as far as they are concerned, have been gone for hours.
That is one wierd key and lock system. I have always liked that you cannot lock yourself out of my Audis. MUST use the key from the outside. NOW, looks like you don't? THAT is an INTELLIGENT key? BS.
Cheers,George

It's possible that I touched the passenger outside handle as I closed the door, but I don't think so because I heard the beep indicating it was locking as I started to walk around the back of the car towards the drivers side. Plus -- it seems strange that you would be able to use the outside handle to lock the doors with the key inside the car.
I also considered the possibility that my key was pressed up against something in my briefcase -- depressing the lock button -- but I checked when I finally got it unlocked and the key was loose inside my bag. Bottom line -- I am now convinced that it is simply a bug in the system. My 35k inspection is coming up and I am going to have the dealer upgrade the MMI system because of other bugs related to the bluetooth. Perhaps it will fix this problem as well.
