Default "Pop" sound when I turn the steering wheel

98 A6 quattro 158k

Sometime when I turn my steering wheel sometimes I will hear a "pop" sound on the passenger side. I took it into a local shop who told me the "steering was loose" and they tightened it, I am not sure what they did. Now I hear the pop sound on the drivers side. Can anyone tell me what to tighten on the steering so I don't need to take in back into the shop. I am not as familiar with the steering parts of the car and any info would be helpful.

that popping is probably the control arms. Check the bushings and ball joints and see what they look like.

The shop checked the control arms and said they were fine. I also had a buddy of mine look at them as well. This is why I am curious as to what the shop tightened on the steering to stop the pop noise.

Loose stearing? and they tightened it?

Sounds fishy to me

It would be nice to know what they tightened.. maybe the rack?

Why don't you ask the shop?

I should have asked the shop, I was just excited that the noise was gone on the passenger side and that I didn't need to replace the control arms. Now with the noise on the drivers side I assume it is the same thing. If it is as simple as tightening up some bolts I want to just do that, but I need a little help in knowing what to look for.

I recently saw a thread about this though I am not sure if it was here or over at Audiworld but it talked about the entire steering rack coming loose and causing popping/banging noises. I beleive it said there were two bolts that hold the rack in and that they sometimes come loose. Do a little searching here or over there it shouldnt be hard to find the thread.
