question about Oil in Audi A6 Quattro
2003 Audi A6 Quattro 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 59,000 miles
Hi, I am thinking about buying a 2003 Audi A6 Quattro with 59,000 miles and i have never owned this type of car before. I am currently test-driving it and it appears that it hasn't been serviced in a while. So, my concern was what if it hasn't been serviced on a regular basis. Could there be something wrong with the car, that I can't tell? Also, when changing the oil what type of oil do these cars usually use and where is the best type of places to get an Audi serviced? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oil: Full Synthetic ONLY - most of us on here use Mobil 1 and somewhere around 5w-40
There isn't a ton that needs to be serviced before around 100K besides the usual car maintenance, which is the main timing belt, etc. The full synth oil needs to be changed every 5-7K.
Futhermore, here is your Maintenance Schedule: http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/Audi/Ma...e_Schedule.pdf

Ok thanks... do you think if previous owners didn't keep the oil changed in it there could be damage? Just curious b/c the car lot told us to drive it home so we could see how we liked it and we were checking it out and there wasn't enough oil in it to touch the dip stick..but there are also no warning lights on or anything either... so the salesman called and told us to add a little bit of oil to last until they could get it serviced for me.. could this pose a problem?

Well of course it could pose a problem, but it's completely at the discretion of just HOW LONG it has been running in such condition. All I can say is to try to find the history of service, at only 59K there shouldn't be THAT much history (hopefully just a bunch of oil changes and other miner stuff). Do your best to research the car to it's fullest, there isn't much you can do beyond that. It should be just fine if they get it serviced for you.

You need to be most worried about lubrication of the turbos in a 2.7T. You don't say what engine, but the 3.0 should be a little more tolerant of low oil. However, any car where the owner is too lazy to check the oil (or...maybe it is leaking like a sieve) would make me pause. If he cheaped on the oil, what else did he not do?
My suggestion is to get it checked over by a qualified independent mechanic who knows Audis. There could be suspension or transmission problems you would not recognize and fixing those cost a 2 or a 3 followed by triple zeros.
