Default Repeated MAF Sensor Failure

I have a 2003 A6. In less than 2.5 years, I have had 4 MAF sensors fail. When they fail it cripples my car and makes it virtually indriveable as the car will stall when stopped and jerk into gear at low speeds.

I also do not drive very much at all (like 3,000 miles a year on average), so to have 4 failures in less than 2.5 years is perplexing. So it makes me wonder if there could be an issue outside of the sensors that is causing them to fail. The odds of 4 failures in that short of a period seems low, compared with maybe one issue that is resulting in MAF failures.

Any ideas? Am I just really unlucky with these sensors, or could there be a root cause issue that is failing them?

Do you have an aftermarket oiled foam air filter with too much oil in the foam?
