what is the stock rim specs for '96 a6 2.8 quattro?
I believe it was 15" rims. Can I go like 17 or 18? and how wide can I go if I do that?

Yes 15" is correct. You can go to 16" and not have the speedo be incorrect.

Try tirerack.com the site will show all rim sizes that will fit.

use this link:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

it will tell you the speedometer effect from different wheel/tire size combo's

most people will tell you to stay within 3% (total size wheel+tire) of the original spec.

I had BBS RX rims 17x8 +35mm offset with 225/45 17's on a 99 A6 Avant. Recommended size is 205/55 16. The difference between the two was minimal. I wouldn't recommend going much bigger.
