Default Secondary Air Injection Issue

Hello to all here in the Forums. I am new here and desperately in need of some advice.

Here's my story. I own a 98 A6 Quattro 2.8 Automatic with 158k miles. I took my vehicle in for annual safety and emmissions inspection here in New York City. Was told by the mechanic (very trustworthy) that my vehicle was showing an OBDI code (P0411??)that indicated Secondary Air Injection System was in trouble. Here in NY that code will prevent a vehicle from passing emmissions standard. I can say that this code has been present in my vehicle for nearly a year but it posed no problem last year because this new system of checking engine computer codes was only started here in April 05. The short of it is the mechanic is telling me I may be looking at some BIG bucks to repair this problem to pass the emissions testing. As I said, the vehicle has about 158k miles on it and was in need of other work too (including replacement of struts all around, window guides and other assorted but not negligible items). Now I am wondering what to do at this juncture. I think I am looking at at least a $1000 dollars to fix this emissions problem.

What should I do? Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Right now the car is sitting in the garage and isnt being used.

Thanks,

KM

does your car make a whirring noise when starting in cold weather?
i have a 96 wagon that does this only when cold, no codes from it though.

i go to an audi mechanic in northern nj, marty's audi/vw
might be worth a call to check the price.

Hi and thanks for looking out guys.

Mastavadz! I will call that friend of yours at the dealership. Just to be sure you said his name is Zlatan and his number is 9173657483? And I should tell him Nicko from Miami told me to call?

Thanks again. You may have broken this case wide open.
