Well, how did you just remove the turbos with the engine in? I know you said you would rather pull it out if you did it again. But i think woudl rather spend 16 hours fighting it in and out as opposed to 40 hours to remove and replace the whole motor.

Pohsib, did you pull them from under the car or remove the bolts and extract them out the top?

Im pretty mechanically inclined and i have removed and replaced a motor in a honda prelude, so i feel capable. But i just have the impression that pulling the motor on my A6 might be more of a headache and easier to mess up.
I don't remember how we got the driver's side out but IIRC, it was easier than the passenger side. For that side, we had to remove the engine mount, starter, and the header while holding the engine up. And that was the easy part. The hard part is the coolant and oil lines...there is one coolant line that is under so many lines, and you need to remove an OEM metal clamp...then putting the turbos in, you have to do some of the lines with the turbos sorta in. Not worth it because you might have some lines not tight...one of the reason why we are pulling the engine out this time because of a coolant leak. Pulling the engine, we could finish in a third of the time and make sure every line is on tight and not leaking.

Default How to remove 2.7T engine - subframe/motor/trans or engine to front?

I will soon be facing 'engine out' on my 2.7T C5s (A6 auto, Allroad auto, Allroad manual).

I read here "whole front comes off and pull engine forward" and "drop subframe/trans/engine".

a) which is easier? Consider hoist available
b) is first method a 'no hoist required' method (car on jacks)?

Links to good write ups?

AC lines: I was always able to 'swing' the entire assemblies to the passenger side (when doing timing belts). Not possible this way when taking engine out?
