anyone know what to look for to find if engine was overheated?

 

Look for melted wires or plastic. But, an engine can overheat to the point of locking up without showing any outside indications.

I just recently bought one with water cooling issue, so I fixed it (water pump and thermostat, and at same time replaced timing belt) But want to make sure engine is in good shape.

Looks like mine is fine no signs of melted wires and all gaskets are ok.

 

The thing you need to watch out for in a car with a history of overheating is a warped head, which you find by giving the car a compression check. Hope all is well with yours!
