stainless steel brake lines
I have run both rubber and stainless (real Aeroquip stainless!) brake lines on a race car on the track at triple digit speeds and can testify that pads and fluid make more difference than the lines. And, there are numerous types of "wire braided" lines some of which have the wires coated with rubber so you can't tell the difference by looking at them. The BIG advantage of wire braiding is additional protection from crap thrown up off the road.

I've always been under the impression that rubber deteriorates over time, so at some point (age) it makes sense to start replacing rubber lines. However, when I had my brake pads replaced at 101k I asked my indie whether it was worth replacing the brake lines and his answer was 1) they did not need it yet, and 2) they would not make much difference unless I was racing. I do run the car a 70-80 generally with bursts to 100-120, so having good lines is still important even though they are not used aggressively. I will probably replace with the ECS lines the next time I do the brakes and fluid -- currently at 153k and there is plenty of pad remaining. The difference is less than $40.
