Default thinking about buying an a6

i'm new to these forums, but not to audi's technically,i've owned a 98 a4 avant quattro with the 2.8 before, which had just over 100,000 miles on it which ended up having a slipping tranny which caused me to promptly get rid of it,but i'm not so sure I want to give this one bad experience my only experience on an audi,i'm looking at a 99 a6 avant quattro with the 2.8,the only thing that i'm skiddish about is the miles, but i would own the car outright instead of having a massive loan like my previous audi, the miles are 181,000 miles i've been told it's a good solid running car and the pictures of it all look great,i actually haven't gone to look at it yet,but what are things that I should watch out for????

Watch out for the transmission as it is the same one as in the car you dumped. However, in the 2.8, I don't think they were as problematic as in the 2.7t or, especially, the 4.2. At least, that doesn't seem to be the case here in the forums. REad the sticky for the 2.7 as 90% of the problems listed are not engine specific (control arms, TB, leaks, etc.).

Good luck,

Bob

Since you owned an Audi, you know what you could be getting into. That's an older, high mileage car and folks don't sell/trade them unless they are avoiding potential or actual repairs. That said, start reading threads on this forum to get an idea of what you could run into. BTW, I'm at 181k with my A6 and it's been reliable but I have replaced an alternator, clutch, flywheel, and recently one pair of control arms over the years. I also just finished the second major brake job (rotors and pads all around) and am looking at the second TB job in a couple months. I consider the TB and brakes as maintenace.

All about the maintenance and repair history... If you don't see any paperwork backing the history, then walk away.
