I'm not sure what you should pay? I would just do a KBB and see what the range is. If you get one in good shape and a warranty, you will be just fine. I have a 2001 4.2l Quattro and love my car. I bitch about it a lot but it is just a little nerve racking every once and a while. I highly recommend one. You will love the sound of the engine and the feeling. They are great cars to drive. I'm more into muscle than turbo. It's just a matter of what you personally like more.

I paid $22,500 for my 2001 A6 4.2 with cold weather, sport, warm weather, and 47k on the odometer....
Bought the car from Carvision in Norristown, PA.....I would recommend them to anyone......good cars at good prices!
As for the 2.7t, I much preferred the 4.2's torque and those beloved FLARED FLANKS!
Sure, you can make the 2.7t faster with all the aftermarket goodies, but you still can't have the flared body.
The 2 cars are just different......the 4.2 is more the cruiser, and the 2.7t is more the racer....it's all what you are looking for....
As for me I LOVE MY 4.2!
Happy motoring......

One vote for the 2.7... Better performance (if you get the stick), great kick-in-the-pants-fun boost, better gas mileage, greater potential for modding (if that's your thing).
That said, I think they're both great cars. I'll admit to envying the wheel flares on the 4.2, but at >$3.00/gal for gas, I'm happy with my 2.7.
Drive both -- the car will decide it for you. Definitely hold out to get the sports package if you can -- worth it. As far as "what to pay..." I'd suggest doing a nationwide search on both Autotrader.com and cars.com to see what the market is getting for the exact car you are interested in. Spend some time surfing the results and you'll develop a feel. Then you'll be prepared to do the inevitable negotation.
Good luck. You will not regret -- they are great cars to own.

For me the Navagation works OK but it can be some what frustrating. It offers several options for your route fastest, highway, toll etc. It doesn't always give you the route you might want to take. I don't know if that's because it's a 2003 model it shouldn't have changed that much. Bottom line it will get you there and back. Hope it helps

RE: 4.2 mods
What kind of Mods can make a significant HP increase without breaking the bank? How much can you get out of the motor? I have the same car with the sport package and I love it but the 300hp feels like 250 because of the weight of the car.
Thanks

RE: 4.2 mods
If you want to do performance mods, the 2.7T is your car. There really aren't any significant mods you can do to a 4.2 to improve performance. You can chip it and pick up a few. You can drop a new exhaust into it and pick up a few more. Optimistically, you can drop a couple of grand to pick up not much more than 15 HP. Drop $600 into a chip for the 2.7 and you pick up 50-80 additional HP. Drop in enough money and you can get over 400 HP out of a car that has 250 HP stock.
Even a 2.8 offers easier mods (superchargers) than the 4.2. The good news is, it starts out with pretty good performance that keeps most people happy. That said, if you want to mod, the 2.7T is the ride.

You should check out the attached site (Stoney's links) and scroll down to Model Info it has answers to most of the questions you ask about. I have found it very helpful.
