Timing belt on a 01 4.2l, what is the real deal?
Last week I purchased a 01 A6 with ~87,000 miles. While interviewing for a shop, the people I talked with made me feel I needed to get the car in right away for service, Audi says 105K. Who's right?
Am I on borrowed time, or am I safe for a few thousand miles?

audi changed there service from I believe 105k to 80k due to the number of timingbelt failures that were accuring before the sugested service mileage.
at 80k I would say that you are right for a timing belt service.
my suggestion to you is to change the waterpump along with all the tenchoners also make sure you are getting real oem replacement parts. there are cheap replacement parts out there that in some cases are no better than the already failing part you replaced

The real deal is the factory does recommend replacing the timing belt at 105k yes, but many people across the U.S. have had snapped timing belts causing head damage or water pump failures at around 90k. So replacing the T belt, water pump, thermostat, and rollers&tensioners is almost a must at 80k.

I had mine replaced along with the water pump and some other scheduled maintenance at $70k just to be safe. You should have it replaced sooner than later...
