timing belt/chain
The C5 platform A6 has both a belt and two chains. The belt runs from the cranshaft to a pulley for each bank of cylinders. The pulley drives a chain which spins each chamshaft, so it's more like a belt-chain hybrid system.
The C6 platform A6 is a chain for both applications. They're still using the belt on some smaller displacement models (the 2.0TFSI), but it's chain in the big guys.

If you look at the recommended service intervals, the line for the timing belt disappears after 2005, except for a footnote about the 2.0. All of the other service interval sheets show the timing belt change.
Of course, I've never had the pleasure of digging into a C6, so if an Audi tech needs to correct me on this, please go ahead and correct me!
