Torn CV Boot Wooes
#11
They did the passenger side, which didn't get cut too bad. So I gave it back to them this weekend for the driver's side. I even said explicitly to do a better job this time, which clearly didn't happen. Their idea of cutting the bolt is clearly different than my idea of cutting a bolt.
So would you replace both uprights and both control arms? The car has just under 49k miles so its not like it needs the all control arms replaced. Also, as a DIYer this one could be over my head. Any suggestions for places to take it? I'm in Moline, IL.

Personally I would feel more comfortable having them replaced. ESPECIALLY if you plan on having your daughter in the car. I just really don't like what they did there. If your control arms are ok, certainly don't replace them. Just replace the steering knuckle. I shared a shop with Bryan @ Tullin Concepts in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over a year. He recently relocated to Arizona. I could certainly help you if you were willing to drive. If you are mechanically inclined this is something you can certainly do yourself. It is fairly straight forward. Give Bryan a call to see if he has a set of aluminum knuckles. If you have any questions feel to PM me.

That sounds like a good plan. I'm going to call the shop on Monday, and tell them that I would like all the damaged parts replaced at their cost by the local dealership and see how it goes. In the event that fails (most likely), I will give Bryan a call and see about bringing the car to you in Cedar Rapids.
Any ideas on cost for install (assume both uprights and upper control arms)? Also, I'm handy and would be happy to learn / help, but if you need me out of the way that's fine too.

Talked with Bryan, he does have the uprights available. Alldata time is just about 2 hours per side. We charge $60 an hour. Would be happy to have you out the in shop to watch/help. We are a small shop so we like to think we are a bit friendlier than most. $350 for a set of the knuckles. Just under $600 + tax.
