Trans Problem
1997 A6 Quattro, 115k
Just replaced the cooler lines because they were leaking badly. It was to the point where the previous owner had lost most of the fluid while backing out of a parking space. He parked the car for over 7 months and then sold it.
Fast forward to my ownership. I bought the car knowing that there may have been a possible trans problem. I looked at the car before purchasing and confirmed that the lines where rotted through. I have now replaced the lines and added fluid (trying to get it perfect on jackstands).
The Problem:
Reverse works fine. Forward gears (all of them) cause a very bad shudder when driving. I have not left the driveway so I can not say much about it. It does take a while for the gear to kick in but it does so very abruptly once it does. Open going into neutral and into gear a second time the car will shut off.
Any ideas?

The rotted lines might have left some junk in the fluid.. I'd change the fluid and filter.
Checking the trans fluid level is almost as much fun as hitting your head on a cement wall. I hope you did the temperature thing with a VAGCOM

Blauparts.com has an ATF refill kit with a hand pump. Be sure to get extra ATF when ordering. VAG-COM from ross-tech.com is needed to measure the transmission temperature, as required to get the ATF level as specified in the BentleyPublishers.com Audi shop manual CD.
I've read upon how MUCH fluid should be in the unit. Pull the plug, drip is good, nothing is bad, pour out is bad, AT the desired temperature.
Can anybody tell me just WHY you can ONLY have XXX ounces of fluid IN the tranny? I can't believe that half a pint OVER would damage anything.
Not even "Overengineering" Audi/VW can be THAT ****. Bad part is you can't pull a diipstick and pour a little into it. Do you HAVE to go to the Audi dealer, or HAVE a VAG Com to tell you it is at JUST the right temp to tell if you are a bit high or a bit low?
Much as I have loved them over the last 25 years, they are driving me away.
Cheers,
George

The transmission is not that sensitive to fluid level, it's just that the temperature thing makes sure you get it all the way full to give it the most "extra" to work with. From the sounds of your posts, you have a transmission problem that fluid isn't going to fix. Time to shop the junkyards for a replacement.
Good luck,

The Audi is not driving you crazy -
You have to be crazy to drive an Audi!
