I test drove a 1999 A6, and when coming to a stop, I notice a slight jerk, which felt like it was coming from the transmission, just a slight thump...The guy selling the car said it was just an engine mount and it was an easy fix. To me, it felt like transmission but I'm not an expert. What do you think?

Secondly, I noticed that the steering wheel wasn't perfectly centered when driving straight, it was slightly turned to the left. He said that was because it needed an allignment. Is this true, or am I being scammed?

 

As far as the transmission noise, was it right around 5mph or so when coming to a stop? if so it is the tranny shifting from 2nd to 1st. It can be very obnoxious. But it is normal..

 

as far as the steering wheel goes, when i had my car receintly aligned they did not secure the wheel enough so it was off, they had to re do the whole alignment. check the tires for uneven wear, being a quattro a four wheel alignment is necessary.
